What I learned in August

This month I learned:

Sometimes bats DO come out in the daytime and they CAN fly right into someones greenhouse when the door is open and that someone is standing right by it causing said person to almost have a HEART ATTACK when she sees it clinging to the window beside her.  (My first thought was rabies because, really, how often do you see bats during the day?)  Thankfully my husband was home and could somehow interpret my garbled language of fear and take care of the "situation" wherein no lives were lost, not ours or that of the bat.

My new aloe vera plant in the kitchen is very handy for when I burn my face with the curling iron, which I am known to do on occasion.  My husband is threatening to take it away.  (The curling iron - not the plant.)

Eating at an outdoor table in our own backyard with the simplest of meals makes me feel as if I am on a most wonderful vacation.

It's handy to have your daughter in the dressing room next door to yours just in case you (or I, whatever...) happen to try on what you thought was a really cute printed, longer top, cinched at the waist, only to find out (after you were thoroughly stuck in the crazy thing) that it was, in fact, a romper and would, in fact, NOT go over your head.

You can spend the better part of a day picking your garden tomatoes, washing, blanching and chopping them, whipping them up into a large batch of homemade tomato soup only to discover that your husband prefers the Campbell's variety...yep.

It is way more fun to imagine the things I could buy with my birthday money (from July) than to actually spend it.  I have almost bought so many great things!

  1. :) had to laugh at the soup! That's because they put high fructose corn syrup in it. The crack of the food world.

That photo is so serene. Looks like a bit of simplicity in the middle of a busy city. Lovely post!

    1. Sandi you are probably right about the corn syrup! The photo was from a sweet town on the Olympic Penninsula in Washington State.

  2. After looking through several of your posts and reading your byline and about me, I think we are kindred spirits...looking for beauty in the ordinary. We even live in the same part of the country.

    Glad to have found you.

  3. Oh no, all that work, when you could have just opened a can :) I'm sure the fresh was great- you'll just have to retrain his taste buds! Funny how birthday money buys so many things...until you actually start spending it! And the bat - I'm sure my scream would have killed it - at least that's what happened to a mouse that crossed my path recently - I almost felt sorry for it. I love reading your what I learned lists!

    1. Teresa, I froze most of the soup in small portions because I definitely prefer the homemade version! Mice are not my favorites either but I would take a dozen mice in trade for that bat!

  4. You had me smiling with each one, Mindy. This was a great and fun list of things learned. The bat would have so given me a heart attack too. Glad I stopped by. Blessings.

    1. They are really easy to grow and are pretty handy for burns of any sort. Your profile/wedding picture is so cute!

  6. That's what I need.....an aloe vera plant! I'm laughing at that because I too have "curling" problems. I bought a curling "wand" which is like a curling iron, but without a clamp to hold your hair down. Instead you use your hand to curl the hair around the wand. Obviously, burns ensue....but my hair looks great!

  7. I finally gave up using the curling iron. I have tremor in my hands and I always burned myself!
That is typical that your hubby preferred can soup! lol
The bat incident would have frightened me too.
I look forward to cooler temps when we can enjoy eating on our patio again. It makes the simplest meals seem special!

  8. Oh Mindy, that bat sounded awful! We have had several bats here that have rabies - kind of scary! My nephew found one clinging to his life-jacket (thankfully he was not wearing it at the time) during the day and it was acting very oddly.

Anyway, it's always so nice to visit you, dear friend! Love and hugs!

  9. Mindy, you have such a great sense of humour and just crack me up! I am not afraid of many animals but I am with Teresa - mice absolutely terrify me. I would rather face a grizzly bear in my kitchen than a mouse, lol.
A shame about the soup and your hubby. Have you thought about mixing them half and half and not telling him, lol. Then slowly reduce the ratio over time until he is eating the real soup and enjoying it! It works, trust me. And he will thank you for it ;)
Great post - thank for the giggles, my fun friend.

  10. Hi Mindy! Love the romper story! And the bat thing? You'd still see me running!!
I have to tell you that I found some of those solar light mason jars at a craft fair this summer. I bought several for gifts (and one for me, not gonna lie!). It reminded me of your post on the ones you had on your potting table. I LOVE mine.
You learned a lot last month :)

  11. Such cute stories Mindy. Bats are good creatures, except when they fly out during the day...
I once had a large rat jump right out of a flower planter I was watering. Happy September. xo

  12. We have also enjoyed eating outdoors especially when company comes over. It makes it more special and clean up is easier. Glad you survived the bat incident. My daughter had one in her room this month. Thankfully my husband took care of it.

  13. I love thinking about spending birthday money. It always goes farther in my head than it does in real life, though!

  14. We get bays in our church quite regularly. Every time they think they have sealed up all of the places where they are getting in, another appears! One of God's creations I can do without, thank you very much! :)
